Luis Gil played for Pateadores in his youth days until 2008. In 2008, Luis attended the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He played there for one year until turning Pro in 2010 through Generation Adidas. Interest was shown from several top European Clubs, main interest shown by English Premiere League's Arsenal.

Luis Gil first entered the International scene at the age of 16 in 2009. He was placed on the U.S. U17 roster for the CONCACAF U17 Championships and the FIFA U17 World Cup. He made 32 appearances for the U17 squad and scored 5 goals. In 2010, Gil was put on the U.S. U18 roster for the Milk Cup tournament in Northern Ireland. He made 5 appearances for the U18 squad. In 2011, Luis was named on the U.S. U20 roster. In 2013, Luis Gil participated in the FIFA U20 World Cup, where he scored a spectacular goal from outside the box against Spain. He made 13 appearances and scored 5 goals. Between the years of 2011 and 2013, Luis has participated in 5 U.S. U23 Men's National Team games having scored one goal. Luis Gil was placed in a weighted lottery, through Generation Adidas, in which the Kansas City Wizards won the rights to his services on February 22, 2010. However, due to his preference to play for a western based team, he was traded to Real Salt Lake the very next day. Gil made his professional debut in 2010 against D.C. United in the 2010 US Open Cup. Later that year he was loaned out to AC St. Louis of the USSF Division 2 Professional League. He made 9 appearances and scored one goal. His first goal as a professional was in the 93rd minute against Austin Aztex, on September 18, 2010. Luis returned to Real Salt Lake about a month later. He made his return debut for Real Salt Lake on October 19, 2010, against Cruz Azul in a CONCACAF Champions League game. Luis made his MLS debut against the LA Galaxy on March 26, 2011, as a second half substitute. Gil's first MLS goal came on August 6, 2011 against the New York Red Bulls. Luis has made 119 appearances for Real Salt Lake and has scored 10 goals.
